5 out of 5 stars Nuvi Sat Nav   September 7, 2010
Mrs. Fiona Hick
Easy to use, clear instructions. Have just used very reliably in Italy, my only criticism would be the english pronunciation of Italian streets, (a bit disconcerting), I swapped the language to Italian was then OK.

4 out of 5 stars Happy with my first satnav   August 28, 2010
Adam Quesne (HOLMFIRTH, W Yorkshire United Kingdom)
I used a loaned Garmin Nuvi in the USA on a recent holiday, and it worked very well. I wanted something for when I got back to the UK, and after a little research the Garmin 1340 seemed about right in terms of price and functionality - although so many options to choose from. In hindsight, given the little difference in price for the traffic option, I might have gone for this.
I have only used in the UK so far, but wanted one with European maps as I am hopeful of a holiday abroad sometime! It has been just as I had expected. You cannot ignore the need for a general sense of where you're going, and be prepared that it will not be 100% right every time in terms of where it sends you - but with common sense it is a very handy assistant! As a warning, you do need to accept that points of interest, e.g. shops, are not right every time. When in Devon it identified a Tesco superstore, but the location wasn't quite right. We did find it a bit further on (this happened with 2 different supermarkets), but found out that it hadn't identified one that was even nearer - it just wasn't on the database. So a bit hit and miss with the database accuracy. Oh, and it saves arguments with the wife over which route to take - well reduces it a bit!
Overall, very happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful and strangely addictive   August 25, 2010

I bought a satnav because my new partner can neither drive nor navigate (even when travelling north). After a considerable amount of research, I chose Garmin for the battery life (I often rent cars and there isn't always a power outlet these days) and ease of updating via the PC.
Emily (that is the English female voice, so that is what we call her) is efficient at getting us to our destination; if I disobey her, she quickly calculates a new route. Her estimated arrival times are astonishingly accurate, never changing by more than a few minutes during a long journey, even in the UK.
There are three route settings: fastest, shortest and least fuel. In practice I have found it best to leave it on "fastest" and drive steadily. The other settings don't make much sense, as they seem to involve a lot of stopping and starting in tiny country lanes.
The battery can be recharged at home with any mini-USB charger (e.g. Motorola or Blackberry) or (very slowly) through the USB port of a PC.
Even though I took advantage of the free update before using Emily, a lot of speed limit data is very out of date and I have switched off the camera alerts because too many of them are wrong or are still warning of old roadworks.
We took Emily on holiday to Sweden, where she was invaluable, although she should have asked her colleague Ingrid (the Swedish voice) how to pronounce the place-names and route numbers: "continue on 70" came out as "continue on kitty", her attempt at "sjuttio".
As for setting destinations, by far the most accurate way is to use latitude and longitude, which I get from Google maps. Even in the UK, postcodes can cover large areas and the address database only seems to contain houses with numbers and street names.
I have got used to Emily being in the car now and use her even when I don't need to!

4 out of 5 stars great satnav   August 24, 2010
C. E. Bonner (Leeds UK)
Only used once so far. Worked straight from the box. The sat nav worked beautifully. Quickly found a signal. Speaks the name of the roads which I found very helpful. Approaches to complicated motorway junctions are easy with the lane guide. Lots of features such as nearest supermarket, petrol station etc. My only problem so far has been that there is only one voice option (a female). There may be more but if so I haven't found them yet. Also there isn't a mains adapter which would be useful. However all in all a great sat nav at a very good price.
