1 out of 5 stars Really irritating product   September 8, 2010

I have no idea what this thing is, but it comes up automatically on amazon and prevents you from seeing what you wanted to look up which is very annoying. Looks completely unnecessary. I'd just get a book on paper format rather than electric. You can book mark it, put in your bag, lend it to your mate when you've finished it and they look good on your shelves.

3 out of 5 stars The Kindle is nice but books are overpriced   September 8, 2010

I've seen the new Kindle device and it's lovely as a piece of technology, however I would not buy one at present for a number of reasons!

It's not yet in colour.
The books are way overpriced, with a few limited exceptions!I am not getting a physical copy and I expect that to be reflected in the price. They should be at least half the price of a physical book!
I can't give the book to charity if I no longer require it!
I can't lend it to a friend!
The choice is not yet wide enough!
I'm quite happy to occasionly read kindle books on the Iphone.

When all these things are sorted (well at least the price and an ipad killing colour version)I'll be first in the queue!!

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!   September 8, 2010

This is not a review of the Kindle, I am unable to do so as mine disappeared en route. Please be aware that Amazon are sending these out by standard Royal Mail first class post with absolutely no means of tracking it either by you as the buyer or by Amazon themselves. If like mine yours goes missing then expect no help, they are stonewalling me and refusing to help while repeatedly telling me how good their couriers are. I'm shocked that they would send out items of this value in this way and even more shocked by their disgraceful attitude in refusing to help me. Typical of large corporations in this day and age, eager to get the money from you but as soon as they have it they just don't give a damn.

1 out of 5 stars Prices of Books too high!   September 8, 2010

Great device, however it is daylight robbery that you pay at least the same as hardcover book price! Piracy will be more of a problem for ebook readers and as it was for the music industry it was caused by overpricing of its media. We know that a digital copy is essentially at no cost to the seller.Nobody minds paying a reasonable cost to the author and costs of 3G network etc,but if you want to avoid piracy don`t rob your customer.

4 out of 5 stars Just a note on the screen   September 8, 2010

I was going to hold off on a review for a couple of months to see how it goes, but I am so impressed with the new pearl e-ink screen I wanted to comment on that.

At first look I couldn't tell what all the fuss about the new screen was about, the contrast between text and background was greater but so what! Then I started reading, and read for about half an hour before I realised I wasn't wearing my glasses and hadn't had any trouble struggling with fuzzy words (and believe me, a normal printed page looks fuzzy to me without glasses - and I stand no chance with a computer screen).

I put my glasses on and the experience was even better. Then I noticed the screen seemed to be glowing, and I thought, that's odd, it's not supposed to be backlit. The pearl display seems to "gather" light and ever so slightly self illuminates, so, although obviously you can't read in the dark, you can read the Kindle 3 in lower lighting conditions that you might be able to read a treebook, and definitely in lower light than you can read a Kindle 2.

Not really a comment on the Kindle, but I also bought the Kindle Cover with Light - a bit expensive for what it is, and when you first try the light it is not very impressive, being brighter in the top right than in the bottom left of the screen. However, reading my Kindle in total darkness (in bed), with this corner light on, and the pearl screen was again easy, with and without the glasses!

I could wax lyrical about the Kindle for a long while (I've only just received my Kindle 3, but I've had a Kindle 2 since Christmas and I still love it) but I still want to hold off on a thorough review until it has proved it lasts!

I personally don't think there is a better e-reader out there, but I took a star off, because although I love my Kindle, and it's pretty close to perfect, it isn't quite there yet!
