5 out of 5 stars A Truly "Must Have" Gadget   September 9, 2010
Andrew McCann

Having received my Kindle (and one that I ordered for my wife) just over a week ago, I really must say that this is one gadget that I would not like to be without- and I wish that I had had one years ago. How wonderful to be able to download books that serve one's current purpose (be it travel, study, research, business, general entertainment etc.) at the touch of a button.

It is true that there is a limitation on accessibility to the range of materials that are available in printed editions, but I have personally found a wide and varied selection that meets most of my current needs. The quantity of books available for free download (especially Classics) is also quite considerable (although the presentation can vary from being very good indeed to being quite poor.)

I would imagine that once the Kindle has fully established itself in the community (and I am talking about the UK here, where it is still relatively new) that it will be commonplace for publishers to release their books in Kindle editions, alongside printed versions, although I must say that there seems to be quite a wide variation in what might be regarded as a "fair price." Bearing in mind the additional costs involved especially in relation to the printing and distribution of published books, I do find it hard to understand why some publishers pitch their Kindle prices so close to the cost of printed editions. Also, in a society which advocates the importance of digital literacy together with traditional forms of literacy in its people, it does seem rather contradictory to pose the burden of a VAT charge on digital books.....but never mind....I would still not like to be without my Kindle.

3 out of 5 stars Some limitations   September 9, 2010

As an e-book reader the Kindle3 is very good, it's just that i think it could be better.

It's surely for example only a short step to incoroporating an mp3 player and for reading papers, magazines and illustrations it's going to need colour.

The experimental mp3 player by the way is fine, it just needs a proper operating menu.

THe internet browsing function needs rather more attention though.

3 out of 5 stars The Kindle is nice but books are overpriced   September 8, 2010

I've seen the new Kindle device and it's lovely as a piece of technology, however I would not buy one at present for a number of reasons!

It's not yet in colour.
The books are way overpriced, with a few limited exceptions!I am not getting a physical copy and I expect that to be reflected in the price. They should be at least half the price of a physical book!
I can't give the book to charity if I no longer require it!
I can't lend it to a friend!
The choice is not yet wide enough!
I'm quite happy to occasionly read kindle books on the Iphone.

When all these things are sorted (well at least the price and an ipad killing colour version)I'll be first in the queue!!

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!   September 8, 2010

This is not a review of the Kindle, I am unable to do so as mine disappeared en route. Please be aware that Amazon are sending these out by standard Royal Mail first class post with absolutely no means of tracking it either by you as the buyer or by Amazon themselves. If like mine yours goes missing then expect no help, they are stonewalling me and refusing to help while repeatedly telling me how good their couriers are. I'm shocked that they would send out items of this value in this way and even more shocked by their disgraceful attitude in refusing to help me. Typical of large corporations in this day and age, eager to get the money from you but as soon as they have it they just don't give a damn.

1 out of 5 stars Prices of Books too high!   September 8, 2010

Great device, however it is daylight robbery that you pay at least the same as hardcover book price! Piracy will be more of a problem for ebook readers and as it was for the music industry it was caused by overpricing of its media. We know that a digital copy is essentially at no cost to the seller.Nobody minds paying a reasonable cost to the author and costs of 3G network etc,but if you want to avoid piracy don`t rob your customer.
