4 out of 5 stars The hallmark of the Panasonic TZ range is a mature and reliable product.   September 7, 2010

Introduction

On January 26, 2010, the fourth generation of Panasonic's "Travel Zoom" line, the TZ10, was introduced. This camera has already won the EISA award for Best Products "European Travel Compact Camera 2010-11."

Design and Build Quality

The TZ10 is a very feature rich, solid metal-bodied camera with a good selection of external control and a fairly intuitive menu system. The startup time is approximately 1.1 seconds. One immediate negative I noted is that instead of a half press of the shutter button returning you to shooting mode, there is a mechanical slider switch to select between shooting and playback modes. The shutter release time lag is as short as approximately 0.006 seconds. AF locks onto a subject in approximately 0.35 seconds (wide end) / 0.41 seconds (tele end). A "Q" menu button provides fast access to the most often changed settings.

MEGA O.I.S has evolved into Power O.I.S, claimed to be twice as effective as on previous models. The lens is a LEICA DC VARIO ELMAR 25mm to 300mm, comprising 10 elements in 8 groups, including 2 ED lenses and 2 aspherical lenses with 3 aspherical surfaces. At the lens maximum telephoto extension you still have a choice of 3 aperture settings. The zoom range is one of the most versatile among the travel zoom competition. The lens does not extend that far which helps to keep the camera relatively discreet. A rather slow aperture range from f3.3 to f4.9 detracts from an otherwise superb lens construction.

The TZ10 features one of the most advanced GPS implementations found in compact cameras. The location data where the photo was taken is automatically embedded with its latitude and longitude in the EXIF data. Thus, geo tagged images can be pinpointed on the maps of social media Internet maps. Real time information of the place when taking photos - covering 73 countries - is provided. The internal clock of the camera is adjusted to the local time of the place where the camera is, so you do not have to set the clock manually. However, battery life suffers when GPS is turned on.

AVCHD lite allows almost doubling of the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format. Dolby Digital Stereo Creator records high audio quality and there is a Wind Cut function. A one-touch movie button allows for instant recording of videos. You can fully utilize the powerful 12x optical zoom in movie recording. Movie duration is 29 minutes, 59 seconds. There are 18 scene modes for motion image!

The screen brightness automatically adjusts in 11 steps as the surrounding brightness level changes and the resolution sufficiently allows for establishing critical focus. However, navigating through images is pretty slow, roughly half a second to go from one picture to the next and this gets worse once the view is magnified.

Image Quality

The TZ10 does not expose accurately at night. In standard lighting, however, exposure fares better, although images are slightly underexposed. The integrated flash is well implemented.

Conclusion

The hallmark of the Panasonic TZ range is a mature and reliable product.

I am really enjoying using my new camera but there is lot to learn about the many facets of the TZ10. The zoom is very good (*12)and the picture quality is very good!I shall report back at later stage when I've discovered all interesting goodies that the camera has to offer

Like other reviewers I wanted a camera I could stick in my pocket but which had a quality close to my DSLR. That is what I get with this little gem. I cannot find anything to complain about the camera itself. If I have to find a gripe it would be that the bundled software needs some development. Like others, 99% of the time I just leave the camera set to iA and let it work out the exposure which it just about always gets right. There is just about no delay as the camera assesses the scene so pictures can be snatched. If you want a great little camera this is the one.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Memory Card, BUT NO MEMORY CARD INCLUDED!!!!   September 3, 2010

1 ISSUE!!

IT DOES NOT COME WITH A MEMORY CARD!!!!

You can easily buy one for it, but it does not contain one in the box, which is a slight issue as you need one to work the camera.

But other than that, it is wonderful as far as I can see..

My parents recently decided to buy me a camera for my birthday, and I got to choose it.
I love the way this camera looks as it looks slightly more classic and less modernised than the others, it is also a VERY good camera, and a shop assistant reccomended it, who knew a lot about cameras, so it must be very good! :)

I have not yet used this camera, but it looks great, and I did try one out in a shop, so I know it is. The clarity of images is wonderful, it takes beautiful photographs.

I just thought it would be useful to inform future buyers that they will need to buy a memory card seperatley.

IT DOES NOT COME WITH A MEMORY CARD!!

5 out of 5 stars What versatility!   August 31, 2010

What a lovely camera! It beautifully combines ease of use and user control and produces excellent images. Videos are high quality, include the zoom function (which is fantastic) and are extremely easy to start and stop. The controls are generally well designed and easy to use with a nice combination of short cuts, dedicated buttons and menus. The screen resolution is very good and the 3 inch screen makes it pleasurable to review shots. Inevitably there is some compromise to be made. The camera is expensive but I think remains good value. Packing so much functionality and quality in means that compared to other similar compact cameras it is significantly larger and heavier. You can put it in your trouser pocket but it feels a little bulky. If you like quality, versatility and user friendliness, and don't mind the price and it's size - go for it!
